In 1853 Verdi confirmed his place as the supreme Italian opera composer with La Traviata, a powerful story of love and honour.

Amidst the decadence of the Parisian salons, Alfredo falls for the courtesan Violetta, enthralled by her fragile beauty. After months of bliss their world is shattered by the intervention of Alfredo’s father Germont, demanding that Violetta should abandon his son and her love for him as a matter of honour. The heartbroken Violetta agrees.

Alfredo’s anger with the terminally ill Violetta abates only when his father reveals the full extent of her sacrifice to his exiled son. Alfredo rushes to her side, begging forgiveness for doubting her love, only to have her die in his arms.

La Traviata has been described as one of Verdi’s most delicately scored operas. A work whose clarity and simplicity rivals that of Mozart’s operas, and where, in a touching yet highly charged series of duets, the emotional dilemmas facing the three main protagonists are laid bare with simplicity and nuance.
This production has been made possible by the kind assistance of Beachcroft LLP and Zurich UK General Insurance.

What we say…

There is a real buzz when Opera Project arrive at the Tobacco
Factory. Their work is exciting and it’s rare to see opera of this
high standard in such an intimate setting.

Lunch with Opera Project 23 October, 11am - 1pm, £15
Join Opera Project’s Richard Studer and Jon Lyness for a fascinating insight into how they approached staging Verdi’s beautiful and tragic masterpiece at the Tobacco Factory. Richard will also demonstrate how he worked with the singers on the scene at the heart of the story: when Germont persuades Violetta to give up his son Alfredo for honour. The discussion will be followed by a buffet lunch (included in the ticket price).
