Mayfest week 2: Sleep-deprived but loving it…

After a rather thrilling first week of theatrical mayhem, Mayfest part deux gets off to a flying start tomorrow night with the premiere of Keepers, a brand new show by the Plasticine Men, a Bristol-based double act that includes Ffion Gill, who may be familiar to you from his work with Precarious (Druthers, Anomie) and Lost Spectacles (Lost in the Wind). The show was developed through Prototype, our forum for the development of new work, programmed by Theatre Bristol. Expect strong physical storytelling, with a distinctly comic edge and atmospheric live music. “Highly recommended. Not to be missed!” says the British Theatre Guide’s review. Wattle & Daub’s beautiful and tender puppet show Triptych opens at the Brewery on Wednesday (part of the trilogy, Norkus, appeared as a work in progress at Mayfest last year, winning the young company a strong following) and then later in the week we’re really delighted to welcome back trans-European storytelling wizards NIE with their promenade piece set aboard the London Underground, Everything Falls Apart. Tickets are flying for this one, so make sure you book yours soon.
Mayfest closes its doors for the year on Sunday, but there’s still plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks. Our third season of script-in-hand readings starts this coming Sunday with a double bill of unsettling new plays by up and coming writers. It’s perfect Sunday afternoon fare: compelling stories, cake and post-show chatter – all for the bargain price of £3! Find out about all this season’s Script Space readings here. And Susan & Darren continues to pick up fantastic reviews since it transferred to London. We can’t wait for this one, especially its pre-show workshop, which is described as ‘altering the course of the evening’s performance’ (limited places).
Looking a little further ahead, how d’you fancy a powerfully atmospheric and moving drama from one of Ireland’s foremost contemporary playwrights…? Click here to find out about this week’s Mystery Show.
