John Godber presents Script Space Prize

We were delighted to be able to formally award this year’s Script Space winner Martin Lytton with his prize at a special event here last Wednesday.

Esteemed playwright John Godber (who has been a regular face at the TF during the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s season of his work over the last month) presented Martin with a cheque for £500 for The Girl from Sparta Road after a performance of On the Piste, which John had specially re-written for the BOVTS students.

The established playwright shook hands with the emerging playwright in an informal gathering that was also attended by TFT staff, Script Space coordinator Sophie Lomax and BOVTS principal Paul Rummer.

Set on two warring housing estates, Martin’s play is a kind Greek tragedy for the Skins generation. Lennie has left Sparta Road to be with her new boyfriend. Her old gang are having none of it and will come after her to bring her back, no matter what. It’s a tale of choice versus inescapable destiny from the age of bronze told in the age of silicone, and it was chosen from more than 300 submissions.

This year, taking place in collaboration with Bristol Festival of Ideas, Script Space will realise a new capacity for and commitment to bespoke development opportunities for new and emerging writers. Later on this year we will embark on a period of research and development for The Girl from Sparta Road with a director, dramaturg and students from City of Bristol College.

Script Space V will be launched later this year.
